Mladenov: Unilateral steps from "Israel" will not contribute to ending the violence

The Middle East peace coordinator Nikolai Mladenov said that the days after the announcement of the "Deal of the Century" we witnessed violent incidents in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza, adding that if they continued, the situation on the ground would be complicated.

Mladenov confirmed in a speech to the Security Council this evening, Tuesday, that unilateral steps by "Israel" will never contribute to ending the violence.

He stressed support for the two-state solution on the basis of United Nations resolutions and international law, adding, "It is time to hear proposals to move forward and reach a mediation framework for the relaunching of negotiations. Continuous consolidation of the status quo should be avoided."

He explained that after the launch of the American proposal, Israeli officials pledged to annex large areas of the West Bank, and this would undermine peace chances and a two-state solution.
