Nearly 6,000 migrants are trapped in Libyan detention camps and must be evacuated to Europe "as soon as possible," MSF said Tuesday.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly filed cases of ill-treatment and torture in the prisons of migrants in Libya. The two-month-old conflict around Tripoli has exacerbated the situation throughout the country.
"There are no safe places in Libya to transport these migrants and refugees to take them away from the risk of conflict," said Sam Turner, head of the MSF mission in Libya, at a press conference in Rome on Tuesday.
"That´s why we urgently call for their humanitarian evacuation," Turner said, calling on EU governments.
