The Iranian judicial authorities have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the death of a teenage girl who may have been killed during the reports taking place in the country following the death of Mahsa Amini, the official IRNA news agency.
Iran has witnessed a wave of protests since the death of 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish Mahsa Amini, on September 16, three days after she was arrested in Tehran by the morality police for not adhering to the Islamic dress code.
Dozens, mostly protesters, but also members of the security forces, have been killed since September 16 in demonstrations that the authorities described as "riots", while hundreds of others have been arrested.
"The Tehran Criminal Court has opened an investigation to determine the cause of Nika Chakermi´s death," the agency quoted the capital´s public prosecutor, Ali Salehi, as saying on Tuesday evening.
"An order was issued to investigate this and the necessary measures were taken in this regard," he added.
The Tasnim news agency reported that eight people were arrested in connection with Shakirmi´s death.
"The investigation into the case ... is continuing, and forensic experts have not yet submitted their final report on the incident to the judicial authorities," Tasnim said.
In implementation of the instructions of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Monday to the judiciary to deal with the demonstrators at the level of crimes they committed, hundreds of demonstrators were released.
A senior official in the judiciary, Kazem Gharibabadi, said that more than 620 demonstrators were released in Tehran province alone.
For his part, Interior Minister Ahmed Wahidi attacked those who stand behind the main slogans of the protest movement.
"Those who put up slogans such as ´Woman Life Freedom´ created the ugliest scenes to defend women," Tasnim news agency quoted him as saying.
