Indian actor and director Girish Karnad died Monday morning at the age of 81, Indian media reported.
According to Hollywood Life, Karnad died at a hospital in Bangalore, Karnataka, India.
Carnad has starred in a number of plays and films, most notably "The Tiger" and "Tiger Tail" with actor Salman Khan.
Karnad won the Padma Cheri Prize in 1974 and Padma Bushan in 1992, two of India´s highest honorary awards.
"His work will remain famous for years to come," Prime Minister Narendar Moody Karnad said in a tweet.
"We will remember him for his acting talent and he was eagerly talking about the things he loved."
"I feel sad to hear about the death of actor and writer Geresh Karnad," Indian President Ram Nath Kowind Karand said in a statement.
The Karnataka government today announced a public holiday and a three-day mourning period.
