Guterres: Humans must stop "waging war on nature" to avoid disease

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, said that mankind must stop “waging war on nature,” which leads to the emergence of diseases such as the Corona virus.

He said: "One of the consequences of the lack of balance with nature is the emergence of deadly diseases such as HIV-AIDS, Ebola and now Covid-19, against which we have little or no defense."

Opening the first-ever UN summit on the biodiversity crisis, Guterres said leaders must "change course and change our relationship with the natural world."

The Secretary-General of the United Nations said: "The degradation of nature is not a purely environmental issue, it extends across the economy, health, social justice and human rights."

"Ignoring our precious resources can increase geopolitical tensions and conflicts. However, environmental health is often overlooked or underestimated by other government sectors," he added.
