United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday expressed his "disappointment" over the outcome of the International Climate Summit in Madrid, describing it as a missed opportunity to tackle the global warming crisis.
Guterres issued a statement at the conclusion of the marathon meeting, in which he expressed the "urgent need" to make new commitments to reduce carbon emissions, but did not produce the required results.
"I am disappointed by the outcome of the summit ... the international community has missed an important opportunity to show more ambition to mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis, and to provide the necessary funding for that," he said.
Representatives from about 200 countries participated in the "Cup 25" summit to finalize the implementation of the 2015 Paris Agreement to find from global warming to less than two degrees Celsius.
However, the national interests of these countries prevented this, despite global calls for action in the face of climate change and the serious warnings made by climate scientists.
"We must not give up, we will not give up," Guterres added.
"I am more determined than ever before to make sure that 2020 will be the year in which all countries commit to do what scientists tell us that is necessary to reach carbon neutrality in 2050 so that the Earth does not warm more than 1.5 degrees Celsius." .
