Paris _ Agencies

French President Emmanuel Makin expressed his "regret" for America´s decision to cut off funding for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), stressing Paris ´ commitment to help the agency overcome its crisis.

During a telephone conversation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grande, on Wednesday, Makin said UNRWA services were "necessary for local and regional stability," according to a statement issued by the French Presidency.

At the end of last month, US president Donald Trump´s administration took a series of actions against the Palestinians, including cancelling more than 200 million dollars in bilateral aid to the Palestinians and cutting financial funding for the "UNRWA".

The United States on Monday announced the closure of the PLO office in Washington, citing the refusal of Palestinian leaders to reach out to the Trump administration and start peace negotiations with Israel.
