The European Union warned on Monday that the attack by Libya´s national army chief, Marshal Khalifeh Hafter, was a threat to international peace and security.
The European Union called on all parties to the Libyan conflict to lay down their arms and abide by the UN-sponsored talks, although there are no signs of the end of the month-long offensive.
Earlier, the bloc´s foreign ministers held talks on the crisis in Libya, exacerbated last month after Hafer, which forces control the east, launched an offensive to take control of Tripoli, the seat of the internationally recognized national unity government.
"The military attack by the Libyan National Army against Tripoli and the subsequent escalation in and around the capital poses a threat to international peace and security and increases the threat to Libya´s stability," EU members said in a joint statement issued after a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
"The attack" doubles the risk of a growing terrorist threat in the country, "the statement said.

Since the overthrow of the Muammar Gaddafi regime in 2011, Libya, which is a major transit point for migrants to Europe across the Mediterranean, has been in turmoil and bloody conflicts of power.
Last week, some 60 migrants, mostly from Bangladesh, died when their boat sank off the coast of Tunisia after they set off from Zuwara, the Libyan coastline, towards Italy.
