Canadian Minister of Immigration Marco Mendicino announced Thursday that his country will launch a program to allow the acceptance of one million immigrants over three years.
In a statement, Mendesino said the program aims to compensate for the shortage of employment caused by the aging population and the declining birthrate.
The Canadian minister did not specify a date to start implementing the program.
According to Canadian government data, more than nine million Canadians are expected to reach retirement age by 2030.
Canada welcomed 310,000 immigrants in 2018 and 330,000 in 2019.
The population of the country is 38 million.
