Former Bolivian President Evo Morales arrived in Mexico City on Tuesday on a plane sent by Mexican authorities to La Paz.
He was received by Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, Bloomberg news agency reported.
Morales said earlier that he was leaving for Mexico. "My sisters and brothers, I leave for Mexico," he wrote in a tweet on Twitter. He was grateful to Mexico for granting asylum. "It is painful to leave the country for political reasons, but I will always be a follower," Morales said.
Morales announced his resignation and new elections on Sunday after weeks of protests and riots against alleged fraud in the October 20 election, in which leftist President Morales scored a clear victory over center-right rival Carlos Mesa.
The departure of Morales, coupled with the resignation of a number of prominent political figures, has caused Bolivia to slip into uncertainty.
