A group of students from Birzeit University organized on Tuesday 17 events entitled "We want our teachers with us" in protest against the Israeli occupation authorities´ actions targeting international and Palestinian faculty members of foreign passport holders, including the postponement or Refusing to renew their visas, restricting them and forcing them to leave Palestine.
Twelve professors and professors at Birzeit University are at risk of being deported out of Palestine due to these measures, and between 2017 and 2019 the occupation refused to extend the residency visa of seven international faculty members. Recently, the occupation authorities prevented two professors from entering the Palestinian territories, despite the efforts exerted by the university in partnership with Adalah and Al-Haq.
Dozens of students and members of the academic and administrative staff took part in the pause, which included holding a university classroom on one of the campuses, where they held banners condemning the occupation measures against their professors and others calling on international human rights institutions to intervene urgently to stop their occupation.
Nasser Ammouri, a student at the Right to Education Campaign, said that this event aims to raise the voice in the face of the occupation measures against academics and to demand international human rights institutions to shoulder their responsibilities and move towards forcing the occupation to stop these practices.
Both Birzeit University, Adalah and Al-Haq are fighting a battle to end the escalation in Israel´s discriminatory policy aimed at preventing foreign academics from entering the country and refusing to renew visas for teaching staff.
