Ashtiyeh: The water situation in the Gaza Strip is very dangerous

Prime Minister Mohammed Ashtiyeh described the water situation in the Gaza Strip as "very dangerous".

The head of the Water Authority, Mazen Ghoneim, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the director of the British Development Agency in Palestine, Colin Weinraith, to support the establishment of a 9 million pound water desalination plant in the Gaza Strip.

The Prime Minister said: "The project of desalination plant in the Gaza Strip is a very important project, which is part of the interests and guidance of President Mahmoud Abbas, to help our people in the Gaza Strip and alleviate the suffering of them, the water situation in the Gaza Strip has reached a very serious stage. This project is part of Britain´s contribution to support the two-state solution and part of our concern for the unity of Palestinian geography. "

The prime minister added that "donor support for the infrastructure and assistance provided comes within the framework of the political project to end the occupation and establish a Palestinian state, the unity of geography, the unity of the foundation and the unity of the Palestinian people."

"Supporting the establishment of the central desalination plant in the Gaza Strip through the World Bank came after consultations in Britain to save our people in the Gaza Strip from environmental disaster and provide a sustainable source of water," he said.

"Supporting this important project is part of our commitment to a two-state solution, improving the water situation in the Gaza Strip and helping water access for all," said the representative of the British Development Agency.
