The Spanish authorities’ decision to exclude people infected with Corona virus (Covid19-) from participating in the local elections in the Basque Country and Galicia tomorrow, Sunday, caused widespread anger, while the media and experts described the move as not constitutionality.
The decision affects approximately 500 people who were notified by a letter from the authorities after the deadline for the postal vote.
The decision includes not only those infected with the quarantine virus who are quarantined, but also those registered as infected but without symptoms, as well as those who have symptoms as Covid19 - have undergone a BCR test and are awaiting results.
Andres Betancourt, professor of administrative law at Pompeo Fabra University in Barcelona, ​​described the decision as "terrible" in an interview with the newspaper "El Mundo".
Betancourt said that sick people can be quarantined, but their right to vote must be guaranteed even if they have not previously chosen to vote by mail.
Constitutional lawyer Javier Arbus said that excluding hundreds of people was "completely unconstitutional."
The elections were initially scheduled to be held in Galicia and the Basque Country on April 5, but were postponed due to the pandemic.
A change in power is not expected after the elections in each of the two autonomous regions.
