Media reports in France said that the historical "La Rotund" restaurant located in the capital, Paris, was damaged by a fire that broke out early Saturday morning.
The public prosecutor in Paris confirmed to the German News Agency (dpa) that an investigation had been opened to determine the circumstances of the fire. No injuries were reported.
BFMTV television reported that investigators believe it was an intentional fire, but there is no confirmation, as of yet.
Le Parisien newspaper reported in a report that the fire broke out at five in the morning (0400 GMT) on the balcony of the traditional restaurant in Montparnasse in Paris. The report said that the restaurant manager smelled gasoline, and a window was broken.
The restaurant will be closed for several days, or maybe a week.
The restaurant was very popular with famous authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Steen at the beginning of the twentieth century, and was considered a meeting point for graphic artists.
French President Emmanuel Macron celebrated the results of his election in the restaurant after the first round of the presidential elections in 2017.
