Nearly 80 percent of Gaza´s population is dependent on humanitarian aid after years of siege and repeated rounds of "hostilities" and political unrest, the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said on Tuesday.
She explained that one million Palestine refugees from various Palestinian areas depend on UNRWA´s quarterly food aid to meet their basic food needs.
She said that she and Qatar Charity have launched a project called "Food Systems to End Hunger in the World" to distribute 37,000 meals to Palestine refugee students in 35 UNRWA schools in the Gaza Strip on the occasion of World Food Day.
The distribution commenced at UNRWA´s first Elementary Mixed Elementary School, which will run until Sunday, 27 October 2019.
This activity seeks to enhance the importance of healthy food and healthy eating habits. Each meal was distributed to vegetables and fruits, a fruit-flavored milk bottle, a bottle of water and a croissant filled with chocolate. In addition, each child will receive an information leaflet that highlights healthy eating habits.
She noted that this initiative from Qatar Charity Foundation is timely and in line with the Agency´s efforts to enhance food security and improve nutrition.
"We would like to thank Qatar Charity for this initiative on World Food Day, which is a great opportunity to raise our students´ awareness of the importance of healthy nutrition," said Farid Abu Azra, head of UNRWA´s education program in Gaza.
A general cooperation agreement between UNRWA and Qatar Charity was signed on the sidelines of this year´s UN General Assembly on 22 September 2019 in New York.
