12 immigrants were killed when their boat sank off the coast of Greece

Twelve people were killed today, Saturday, as a boat with about 50 migrants sank in the Ionian Sea.

The Greek Coast Guard announced that "12 bodies have been found so far. Search and rescue operations are continuing," noting that more than 20 people were found alive.

The waters began to flood the boat near the island of Pakse, apparently trying to reach Italy.

Six Greek Coast Guard boats and two Navy helicopters participated in the rescue efforts, according to the authorities.
Thousands of migrants and refugees have died in recent years as they attempt to cross the Mediterranean in small boats and carry people over capacity.
