The head of the Energy and Natural Resources Authority, Dhafer Melhem, confirmed today, Monday, that the electrical deficit in the Gaza Strip has reached 55 percent as a result of the recent Israeli aggression.
This came during his participation in the Third Ministerial Conference on Energy of the Union for the Mediterranean, which was held via "video conference" technology, organized by the Portuguese government, and co-chaired by the European Union and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, in which ministers and representatives of member countries also participated.
Melhem added that the West Bank and Gaza Strip suffer from a shortage of electricity, despite the rehabilitation and development of transmission and distribution networks.
He stressed the severe negative effects of the recent aggression on the Gaza Strip in destroying the electricity infrastructure and partially or completely destroying many solar energy systems.
Melhem explained that securing energy for the Palestinian citizen from its sources at reasonable prices, in line with the seventh goal of sustainable development, requires full Palestinian sovereignty and an end to the occupation.
Melhem said, "The government has worked hard for many years to overcome the shortage of electricity by issuing the necessary legislation in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency, in addition to linking projects with Egypt and Jordan with the aim of diversifying energy sources and reducing dependence on the single source."
