Netherlands: Israeli annexation plan violates international law

The Netherlands confirmed that the Israeli annexation plan constitutes a violation of international law and makes the two-state solution based on international law, previous agreements and international standards impossible.

The Netherlands, through its Foreign Minister Steve Block, and Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Sigrid Kaj, in their response to questions posed by the right-wing party leader, "Thierry Bodett", stressed the illegitimacy of the settlements, that they are an obstacle to achieving peace and a two-state solution, and that The annexation violates international law, and acceptance of it is a dangerous precedent in other conflict areas.

The two ministers reaffirmed the official Dutch position, regarding the illegality and annexation of settlements, as an obstacle to the peace process.

They expressed the Netherlands and the European Union’s commitment to persuade Israel to refrain from carrying out the annexation, as the Dutch government refers to the statement issued by the European Union’s High Representative, Josep Borrell, on May 18 last.

The Netherlands, along with other countries including France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy and the European Union delegation, urged the cancellation of a tender for the construction of new settlement units in Givat Hamatos.
