Hebrew Channel: European leaders have warned Netanyahu against annexing the Palestinian territories

Hebrew Channel 13 reported on Tuesday evening that leaders of a number of European countries have sent messages to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, warning against any step aimed at annexing the Palestinian territories.

According to the channel, French President Emmanuel Macron and the prime ministers of Britain, Italy and Spain have sent personal messages to Netanyahu urging him to work on the Palestinian issue in accordance with international law, asking him in a friendly spirit to not take any steps unilaterally.

The channel quoted European and Israeli diplomatic officials who viewed the messages as saying that Macron warned that this step would undermine stability in the Middle East, and that only through dialogue with the Palestinians and a just and balanced solution can Israel obtain peace that preserves its stability and security.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson sent a similar message in coordination with Macron, while it is not known whether German Chancellor Angela Merkel has sent a similar message either.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez sent a message to Netanyahu saying, "International law must be respected, and a two-state solution must be found in accordance with United Nations resolutions."

The channel indicated that a copy of the message had been sent to the Israeli Defense Minister, Benny Gantz.

As Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte wrote to Netanyahu, that negotiations with the Palestinians must be renewed according to the two-state solution, and on the basis of international law.

Conte sent a copy to Gantz.

The channel considered these messages part of the European pressure on the new government in Israel not to annex parts of the West Bank.
