Palestinian efforts at the United Nations to renew the mandate of UNRWA for three years

Palestinian efforts are underway in the United Nations to renew the mandate of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) for three Years to come.

Mansour told the official Voice of Palestine radio that the Palestinian side, in coordination with the Arab group, held meetings and held contacts with friendly countries to rally votes to renew the mandate.

Mansour expected that the countries participating in the meeting of the Fourth Committee of the United Nations next Friday on the decision to extend the mandate as every time is taking place despite the pressure from some countries to prevent it.

He pointed out that the countries participating in the meeting of the Fourth Committee will hold a meeting on Monday to discuss two items, the first concerning the Agency and the renewal of its mandate, and the second Israeli violations in the Palestinian territories.

UNRWA was established by a UN General Assembly resolution in 1949 to serve some five million Palestine refugees registered in its five areas - Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

UNRWA´s services include education, health care, relief, social services, infrastructure, camp improvement and microcredit.

The Palestinian ambassador pointed out that the Palestinian side is exerting pressure on all countries that have announced that they will donate to the Agency, and did not do to bridge the estimated deficit of $ 83 million until the end of this year.

He accused the United States and Israel of launching an attack on UNRWA two years ago in order to destroy it, considering that the attack on its Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl who resigned recently comes in the same vein because he defended both the Palestinian refugees and the Agency.

Mansour said that the UNRWA administration and a large number of countries in the world reject the attack, as it tarnishes the reputation of the Agency and withholding donations in order to remove the issue of Palestinian refugees from the table of political solution.
