Spain will recognize Guido if Venezuela does not call for elections in 8 days

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said his country would recognize Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guido if eight days of elections were not called. "We want democracy and free elections in Venezuela," Sanchez said in a televised statement on Saturday.

"I want to say very clearly that if eight days of free and fair elections are not called in Venezuela, Spain will recognize Juan Guido as president," the Bloomberg News Agency reported.

Guido was appointed interim president.

The United States and a number of Latin American countries expressed support for Guido, while Russia, Iran, Turkey, Cuba, Bolivia and Nicaragua supported Maduro.
