Washington is concerned about the "disproportionate" focus of the Human Rights Council on Israel!

US State Department spokesman Ned Price said Thursday that the United States has concerns about the United Nations Human Rights Council and will oppose its "disproportionate" focus on Israel, as he described it.

"We have concerns about the council," Price added. We will strongly oppose the council’s disproportionate focus on Israel, as the council’s permanent agenda includes a permanent item targeting only one country.” He said the United States would also lobby against the election of countries with "appalling human rights records".

This came immediately after the re-election of the United States to membership in the Council, as the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday elected the United States to membership in the Geneva-based Human Rights Council, more than three years after the withdrawal of the administration of former President Donald Trump from the 47-nation council in protest against What she described as his chronic bias against Israel and his need to introduce reforms.

The United States, which received no opposition, obtained 168 votes in the secret ballot in which 193 member states participated in the General Assembly. A three-year term begins on January 1, pitting Washington against Beijing and Moscow, which began two terms on the council this year.

US President Joe Biden took office last January, vowing to put human rights at the center of his foreign policy, and his administration did not hesitate to criticize China over Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Taiwan and denounce Russia.

But a Reuters review of the Biden administration's record has so far shown that human rights concerns in other countries have repeatedly been pushed aside in favor of national security priorities and engagement with foreign powers.

Candidates for the Human Rights Council are elected by geographic groups to ensure equal representation. There was no competition today, Thursday, in the election of 13 new members and the re-election of five members. Members may not remain in the membership for more than two consecutive terms.
